Hannah Welch - Some Brothers and Some Sisters

September 25th, 2025
Where did the inspiration from your book come from?

I wrote it for my children as I couldn’t find a book that represented our family or explained that not all siblings live under one roof.

What is your favourite childhood book, that most influenced you as a writer?

I loved Enid Blytons ‘The Magic Far Away Tree’ as it really did feel magical. I also loved ‘Each Peach Pear Plumb ‘by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg, I always found rhyming books really engaging to read.

Have you always wanted to be a writer? Yes, I love writing, but previously had only written songs and poems, this is my first book.

How long did it take you to write your book? The idea and writing was only a few months in the making, I jotted down ideas and then when I had a chance to go back to it, I did. The illustrations took longer, working, and having 2 small children 2 or under, meant I could only draw when they were asleep so I had to work on the illustrations as soon as they both fell asleep.

What is the most challenging thing about writing?

I actually really enjoy it, I love the feeling of reading out my finished book to somebody for the first time and watching their reaction. The most challenging thing would definitely be time.

What do you hope young readers take away with them after reading your book?

I really hope that children feel represented when reading this book. I want them to see a family that is like theirs, understanding that not all families live together, and that is ok.
